Opening event Sunday March 18, from 5pm
An intriguing two-person show presents the works of art lecturer Salama (Moata) McNamara alongside those of Northland Polytechnic arts graduate Shannon Gleeson. Salama’s pieces for the exhibition developed from a research focus on veils and unveiling. Her Maori heritage provides a deep understanding of a world ‘ki tua o te arai – beyond the veil’, and her religion sees her taking on the hijab.
The resulting collection provides insights into cultural and religious difference and in/exclusion. In her first significant Auckland show, Shannon plays with her “curious admiration for chaos”. She chose to work with wax, “one of the most chaotic materials I have ever used”.
Meet the artists Sunday April 8, 2pm
