Ludicrous Likenesses | The Fine Art of Caricature

Wednesday August 2 to Monday October 23, 2017
New Zealand Portrait Gallery, Wellington

Caricature is portraiture of the everyday, documenting the highs and lows of our society. Ludicrous Likenesses: The Fine Art of Caricature marks the 25th anniversary of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive, bringing together depictions both hilariously crude and subtly subversive from the Alexander Turnbull Library Collection.

Following caricature from the 17th Century, all the way through to contemporary digital cartoons from familiar names – Slane, Scott, Murdoch and more – this exhibition shows caricature beyond just ‘funny faces’. Caricature can amuse and entertain as well as question and provoke.

The exhibition has been curated by Alexander Turnbull Library’s Dr Oliver Stead (Curator Drawings, Paintings and Prints) and Hannah Benbow (Research Librarian, Cartoons).
