Twelve artists from the new group called Handshake 4 (HS4) showcase their yearlong developments in the exhibition LEANINGS: handshake4.
HS4 was selected from an open call by Ruudt Peters, a renowned international jeweller from Holland. He appointed international specialists to mentors these 12 talented NZ artists.
Peters’ knowledge made possible that the selected artists were assigned likeminded mentors. Mentors comprise talented jewellery artists as well as fine artists (like Judy Darragh, Regan Gentry and Francis Upritchard). They have mostly been in contact via digital platforms and supported the mentees in their journey. HS4 mentees started with a masterclass by Estonian jeweller Tanel Veenre. Tanel’s brief was to work how space and presentation can be used for jewellery. The workshop saw fresh ideas being explored in creative ways.
The HANDSHAKE Project is in its fourth itineration and act as an support for emerging New Zealand jewellery artists, allowing them to develop ideas and artworks for a succession of exhibitions with the assistance of a chosen mentor. The HANDSHAKE recipients are presented with additional opportunities to develop their practices through a number of challenges, including masterclasses, collaborations and network opportunities with both national and international exposure. All HS journeys can be traced back and followed on their website: handshakeproject.com
The progressive nature of the programme aims to develop independent makers with an innovative and energetic practice.
