Faces and Figures | Susie King

April 13 to April 27, 2017
Creative Arts Napier, Napier

‘Faces and Figures’, an exhibition of ceramics and painting by local artist Susie King. Susie grew up in Napier, in a home where everyone liked to draw, and loved to make music. Her formal training consists of Ardmore Teachers college in Auckland, 1969 to 1971, where Susie majored in Art in her third year under the guiding hand of Brian Gartside. Brian taught Susie how to use clay to build by hand, though mainly to make pots. She became intrigued with ancient Aztec pottery, part sculpture, how the decorated forms also had function for daily life or religion. Over the years Susie has painted and drawn for her own pleasure, mainly figurative studies. She has always admired the work of the Impressionists, and the Realists, in both sculpture and painting. Susie now enjoys creating classical sculptures and draws inspiration from Erté to sculpt elegant female fashion figures. Faces and Figures will be on show in the Small Gallery until 27 April.
