1. Here’s a Plan – (things to do) | Christina Read

Opening Wednesday March 29, 2017 at 5pm
Ilam Campus Gallery, Christchurch

The 2016 recipient of the Olivia Spencer Bower award, Christina Read presents her exhibition 1. Here’s a Plan – (things to do).

This show is based on making plans: plans for exhibitions that I haven’t made yet, inspired by chapter titles from a narrative nonfiction book that I haven’t yet written. Each of the works in the exhibition, from the fabric wall hangings to the collection of perspex floor works, correspond to a particular exhibition proposition.’

Christina Read’s practice is an investigation of personal and unorthodox relationships between language and object, text and image. She is interested in the everyday as a place for acting out the desultory humour of the ordinary. Themes central to her practice include the homemade and handmade; neuroses and anxieties; aspirations and self-delusions; melancholy and pathos. Recent projects include: The Brain, Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, Auckland (2015), a curatorial project commissioned by CIRCUIT Artist Film and Video Aotearoa, Sense and Non-sense: A Festival of Absurdism, Centrum Berlin (2014), curated by Matthew Crookes and Kate Squires, and Correspondences, Boxcopy, Brisbane (2014), curated by Christopher Handran.
